Plantation scheme to get wood for Puri Chariots

The govt will start to plant saplings in over 1,000 hectare this year as part of ‘Shri Jagannath Bana Prakalpa’. This scheme starts after shortage of timber for the construction of Chariots of Jagannath for Rath Yatra in Puri. The depletion of forest area is main reason behind shortage of good quality timber.

Now forest and environment department start the Shri Jagannath Bana Prakalpa scheme which distribute 24 lakh saplings in public for plantation. There is total 1000 hectare land under this scheme and 12 forest divisions will manage it. Over 900 trees are cut each year for Rath Yatra. These woods are usually of Sal, Asan, Dhaura, Simili, Arjuna, Jammu, Piasal and Kasi trees.
