Puri is a temple city located in the state of Odhisa (Orissa) and one of the most spiritual places in the entire country. Also known as Jagannath Puri, it is situated in the eastern India is one of the revered Char Dham in four directions in India. Situated just 60 km from the capital city of Bhubaneswar, the temple city of Puri overlooks the majestic Bay of Bengal and has a temperate climate throughout the year. Due to its religious and cultural significance, Puri has been selected as one of the heritage cities for Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) scheme under Government of India.

It was in the 8th century when Adi Shankaracharya established a ‘matha’ and thus making it one of the revered Char Dham in India. Although Puri is renowned for Lord Jagannath and recognized as Jagannath Puri, other deities like Shubhadra, Balabhadra and Sudarshan are also revered in the main temple complex. Collectively, all these four deities are called ‘Chaturdha Murty’.

Jagannath Puri – Lord of the Universe in Puri

Puri is known for its spellbinding history and cultural identity exemplified by a colossal 12th century Jagannath Temple that worships Lord Jagannath, an avatar of Lord Vishnu. The name ‘Jagannath’ literally means ‘Lord of the Universe’. Not only the Jagannath Temple but the whole temple premise, known as Khetra, is a revered place for the pilgrims. According to the Sanskrit historians, the Khetra extends from the temple of Lokanath on the west to that of Vilveswar on the east and from the eternal sea to the Matianadi which a small stream.

The famous festival of Rath Yatra and other festivals related to Lord Jagannath are celebrated with intense vigor with millions of devotees attending these festivals. The Rath Yatra, also known as Chariot festival witness moving of the deities on colossal chariots which are pulled by hundreds of devotees.
